How I grew more succulents

It’s no secret that I love houseplants—and that I have over 20 of them! I feel like this plant obsession is still in healthy territory though, so no need to worry about me. ha!!

My favorite kind of house plants are definitely succulents. I decided to see if I could successfully grow more through propagation a few months ago, and I’m happy to say—it worked!

I tried it with “Graptopetalum Paraguayense” or better known as “Ghost Plant”. They claim to not survive well (according to the internet) indoors, but my 2 year old plant has proved that wrong because it has never lived outside!

As you can see, the plant above is very overgrown for the pot it is in, so it was time for something new. It was actually a very easy process… Just pop off some of the leaves, put them on top of your soil, or into the soil just slightly, like what I did below.

Since I needed to use a bigger pot in general I pulled out some full pieces for another pot too. Stick the pieces into the dirt as far as you can without putting the leaves in. This will give them more stability. In both cases (full stems or leaves), when you are done getting them set— water them lightly to help them take up roots and stay alive!

Here is one of the pots just a few months later. As you can see it is a bit more blueish gray here, from lack of sunlight lately here in Iowa.

To care for them, put them in a south facing window so they get plenty of sunlight. Mine are in a southwest window, and they do just fine. Water evenly just once a week.

They make such a charming addition to a window! If you are new to house plants, succulents are a great way to start. They don’t need much water— and they are pretty hard to kill. They are also a wonderful addition because they rid the air of toxins. So not only are they beautiful, they are actually very healthy to have around!

Let me know if you give propagation a try. Borrow pieces from a friend and see what all you can grow! Happy planting.
