How to make your own flower arrangement

I love having fresh flowers! I have discovered that making your own arrangement is actually quite simple too— and much more affordable than buying one that has already been put together! So today I wanted to share how you can arrange your own flowers.

First, why should you have flowers in your home? Flowers give a great pop of color and nature for any room. Flowers are great for when guests are coming over, celebrating a special event or accomplishment, when the weather is dreary, or even when you’re feeling discouraged. You don’t need someone to buy them for you either. Buy them for yourself, because you should. Flowers spark joy. So don’t Marie Kondo these out of your life! (ha!!)

My go to spot for fresh flowers is Trader Joes. They have great selection on foliage, accent flowers, and bigger stand out flowers. And their prices are very reasonable. Today’s large example arrangement I made for under $20.

I generally select 2-4 different kinds of flowers or foliage, depending on the size of the vase I want to fill. I wanted to do a larger one this time to show you how you can mix different flowers. In this arrangement I used eucalyptus, mini dianthus, Peruvian lily, and roses.

Don’t be afraid to get creative. Unique arrangements are my favorite. The worst arrangements are the ones that look very stiff and measured. So don’t fuss too much with where everything should be placed. As my mom would say, “just kind of throw it in there!” Honestly I think that is some of the best advice I have gotten on floral arrangements.

Start by cutting the stems down to fit the vase you want to use. Make sure to cut them on a diagonal, and not straight across. This will help them take in water.

Next, pull off any leaves or foliage that will go below the water line. If they are left on and kept under water, it will cause mold to grow in your vase.

To start arranging, use your largest flowers first. In this case, I used roses. As you loosely hold them in place, start putting in the next largest flower, which in this case is Peruvian Lily. Next add your smallest flowers, mine were mini dianthus. And lastly, add your foliage or greenery.

Don’t be afraid to pull out stems after you have them all in, and put them in a different spot that looks more pleasing to your eye. I love to use a rotating stand as I put the finishing touches on an arrangement. With this you can easily see it from all angles, and make it appealing from each—especially if you aren’t placing it up against a wall.

Fresh flowers bring life and beauty to any space. You really can’t go wrong in arranging— so don’t be afraid to try. Or take the pressure off, and just call it practice. The more you practice, the better you will become. And as long as an arrangement is pleasing to your eye— I call that a success!
