bohemian meets country-chic styled concert

I absolutely love decorating for events and parties. There is something so exciting about making a space beautiful and an experience for a large group of people. As soon as we had our musician, Joe Pug, booked— I started to envision what the style and elements might be.

My husband and I had great plans for an outdoor concert, over-looking the Iowa cornfields at sunset… but of course the weather had different plans. So we made the weather call at 10am the day of the concert, and we started prepping our neighbors shed (our back up location). We went to our original concert location, Sisters Garden, and started loading their covered trailer. We ran (alongside my parents and their Sisters staff) with plants and furniture through the mud and rain, laughing at the craziness of the day. And we quickly transformed the shed with furniture, plants, and textiles. Somehow it still all pulled together in time for the early evening concert! All thanks to my family’s business, Sister’s Garden for the collaboration!

The vision for the decor was, lanterns—velvet—vintage rugs—plants—and wicker. And it all came together piece by piece. Some key pieces I scored thrift shopping the day before the concert. Does this make you anxious? Call me crazy, but I think that makes it fun!

We added hay bales for seating, gathered from a farm across the road from Sisters Garden. It helped pull together our look of ‘bohemian meets country’. And it added some fun seating to the mix. We tossed vintage velvet pillows onto the bales for some added charm.

mixed materials

jute rugs, a basket weave topped table, a cotton knit stool, velvet tufted chairs, wooden stools… all layered together in one space— made for an eclectic-bohemian look.

Joe Pug

Puts on an incredible show. My husband and I swear he is even better live than he is recorded. Hence why we have now seen him live 4 times! One of our favorite shows he did was a couple years ago, at a little bar in Iowa City called The Mill. He played there again just the night before he played for us. We were so excited to share this guy’s talent with our friends. This was definitely an evening we won’t soon forget.

The success of this event has us dreaming of what’s next. My husband has a list of musicians he wants to bring to the cornfields of Iowa— for more fun evenings in the future. You can be sure I will be there, ready with some ideas of what it could look like!
